Plain text needs typographic decisions
A text file contains characters and line breaks and nothing else — no font, no margin, no page size. Producing a PDF means supplying all of that, which is why the same file can come out as a readable document or an unreadable wall depending on a handful of choices.
The ones that matter are the typeface (monospaced if alignment carries meaning, proportional if it is prose), the size, the margin, and whether long lines wrap or are allowed to run off the edge of the page.
A worked example
A server log with 180-character lines is converted with a proportional font and wrapping enabled. Every entry wraps across three ragged lines and the columns no longer align, making it far harder to scan than the original. Switching to a monospaced font and landscape orientation keeps each entry on one line and the columns intact.
Limitations worth knowing
- Encoding matters. A file saved as UTF-8 and read as something else produces mojibake; UTF-8 is the safe choice.
- Characters outside the chosen font — many scripts, some symbols and emoji — cannot be rendered and appear as blanks or boxes.
- Tabs are expanded to a fixed width, which can misalign text that was aligned with a different tab setting.
- Markdown, code and other markup are rendered literally, as the characters they are, not interpreted.
- Very long lines either wrap or overflow depending on the setting; neither is right for every file, so choose per document.

Headings from # to ######, bold and italic, unordered and ordered lists, blockquotes, inline code, fenced code blocks and horizontal rules. Tables, footnotes and embedded HTML are not — they need a layout engine rather than a typesetter.
The three built-in PDF font families are offered, which keeps the output small and guarantees it renders identically everywhere. Custom font embedding is on our list.
They wrap at the margin using the real font metrics, so wrapping is accurate rather than estimated. A single word longer than the line is broken across lines rather than running off the page.
Western European accented characters work. Emoji, and scripts such as Chinese, Arabic or Devanagari, are not in the built-in font's character set and are replaced with a question mark. Custom font support will fix that.
