Extracting pages without disturbing the original
Extraction builds a new document from the pages you select and leaves the source untouched. It is the right tool whenever you want something out of a document rather than a document divided up: one form from a pack, a single chapter, the three pages a colleague actually asked for.
It is also the fastest way to make a large file small. Removing 280 of 300 pages reduces the size roughly in proportion, and it does so losslessly — no compression setting can compete with simply not including the pages.
A worked example
A 300-page tender document needs its pricing schedule, pages 41 to 58, sent to a colleague. Extracting that range produces an 18-page file a fraction of the original size, with the pages exactly as they were. If it still needs to be smaller for email, compress after extracting, so you are not spending processing on 282 pages you are about to discard.
Limitations worth knowing
- Ranges are inclusive: 41-58 gives eighteen pages, not seventeen.
- Bookmarks pointing into the extracted range are not carried across, because the outline belongs to the source document.
- Form fields in the extracted pages are flattened into the page content.
- The page order follows your selection where reordering is supported; for a visual rearrangement use Organize Pages instead.
- Encrypted documents must be unlocked before their pages can be read.
