How splitting decides where one document ends
Splitting copies page objects into several new documents rather than cutting the original apart. The source file is never modified, and because nothing is re-rendered every output page is byte-for-byte as sharp as it was.
The only real decision is where the boundaries go. Splitting at fixed intervals suits statements and payslips, where every document is the same length. Splitting at chosen page numbers suits a bundle whose sections are different sizes. One file per page is the blunt option, useful when you will sort the pieces afterwards.
A worked example
A scanner has produced one 84-page file containing eleven separate documents, each followed by a blank separator sheet. Open the file and note the page numbers of the blanks — they are the boundaries. Split at those points, then run Remove Pages on each result to drop the trailing blank. Working in that order means you count the separators once instead of recounting after every deletion.
Limitations worth knowing
- Bookmarks are not divided between the output files; each new document starts without an outline.
- Page ranges are inclusive at both ends, so 4-8 produces five pages. This is the most common off-by-one.
- Page numbers are physical positions in the file, not the numbers printed on the paper — check against your viewer's page counter.
- A password-protected file must be unlocked first, since the page content cannot be read while encrypted.
- Many output files arrive as a single archive rather than dozens of separate downloads.
