Why thumbnails beat page numbers
Organising shows every page as a thumbnail and lets you drag them into a new order, rotate individuals, and delete as you go. Underneath, the result is the same operation as extracting or removing — page objects copied into a new document — but the interface changes what you can reliably do.
Reasoning about page numbers works while the job is simple. As soon as it becomes "this section belongs before that one, and these two are upside down, and that one is a duplicate", numbers stop helping, because every change renumbers everything after it. Dragging what you can see does not have that problem.
A worked example
A report has its appendix bound before the conclusion and two pages scanned sideways. Doing this numerically means working out that pages 34-41 move after page 47, recalculating the positions of the sideways pages, and hoping. With thumbnails you drag the appendix block down, rotate the two pages in place, and export — with the whole document visible while you do it.
Limitations worth knowing
- Bookmarks are not re-pointed when pages move, so an outline will no longer match the new order.
- Thumbnails are rendered in your browser, so the first view of a very long document takes a moment to appear.
- Reordering does not merge documents. To combine files first, use Merge PDF and organise the result.
- Form fields are flattened into the page when the reorganised file is written.
- Encrypted documents must be unlocked before pages can be rendered as thumbnails.
