Accuracy of conversion output
Converting between document formats is an inherently lossy process, and some of our tools are more approximate than others. We would rather set expectations here than have you discover this after sending a file to someone.
- PDF to Word and PDF to Excel reconstruct a document from positioned text. A PDF does not store paragraphs, headings or table cells, so these are inferred. Plain, single-column documents convert well; multi-column layouts, complex tables, footnotes and precise styling do not survive.
- Word to PDF, Excel to PDF and PowerPoint to PDF render your file using your browser's layout engine, not Microsoft Office. Content is preserved; pagination, fonts and exact spacing will differ. SmartArt, charts and animations are not reproduced.
- OCR makes mistakes in proportion to the quality of the scan. A faint or skewed page yields poor results, and handwriting is not supported at all. Always read the recognised text before relying on it.
- Compression re-encodes images. A file that is mostly vector text will barely shrink, and the tool says so rather than claiming a saving it did not make.
- Repair is best-effort. Data that is physically absent from a damaged file cannot be recovered by any software.
Check every converted document against its original before circulating it. Keep your original file — always.
Security and protection tools
Protect PDF applies genuine AES-128 encryption, and a document encrypted with a strong password cannot be opened without it. The permission flags are a different matter: they are instructions to the reader application, honoured by compliant software and ignorable by software that chooses to. Do not treat them as access control.
Redact PDF genuinely destroys the content beneath each mark in the output file. It is still your responsibility to check the result, and to make sure you marked everything that needed marking. Automatic find-and-mark cannot see text inside images.
Sign PDF produces a visible signature image. It is not a certificate-based digital signature and does not cryptographically prove identity or prevent tampering. Where a legally binding electronic signature is required, use a qualified signature provider.
